I've heard all of those with digital and a good few with analogue. Couldn't tell you why tho.
I can say the better quality boards you put in a pi for instance improves things steadily.
Whether that is jitter at the base of it I don't know. Even if jitter is measurably lower doesn't gaurentee that was the main reason of course.
Personally I dont worry too much as long as its better

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

All I want to know is how to improve digital sound to get it as good as possible and therefore try and identify the problem areas and come up with a solution that will fix them. Each step I have taken has given sound improvements, the first being to put the CD player in the bin!
    Main system : VPI Scout 1.1 / JMW 9T / 2M Black / Croft 25R+ / Croft 7 / Heco Celan GT 702

    Second System : Goldring Lenco GL75 / AT95EX / Pioneer SX590 / Spendor SP2

Essential ( I think ) is to retrieve the CD player from the bin.

Begin by asking yourself what is right or wrong with the audio your CD player provides, what make and model is it ?

a easy path usually is to update the analogue stage opamps, but before that download a schematic and have a look at what style of opamp is needed
which might be what is called DIP size or soic . I recently did the op amps in my Sony CDP555ES and replaced with burr Brown opa2107
which for the Sony I could not ask for better audio performance.

If your player has DIP size opamps already then it will be much easier to change, if soic yes it can be done but requires much care and skill as soic are very small indeed.

I was thinking some of the finer CD players had discrete amp circuits? Which i suppose could really open up the possibility of upgrading?

Cheaper and far more effective bang for bucks is to buy a RPi with Allo Boss DAC, from what I have heard using this with FBA sounds better than any CD player.

    Nice explanation.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

He is the man. He has covered so many areas of digital audio on the HB project and is an impartial journalist.
