My Squeezebox setup is very, very stable, but there again, I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel all the time, and I'm not drawn in by the latest in visual rendering.
My server is local, so doesn't have to go to the www. whenever I want to play local material (which is not the case for some player distros), and all of the connections for critical equipment are wired.
Stability or lack of is one of the reasons I moved away from the Pi for the moment. The SBCs I have are ethernet wired but the GUI is on a phone via wifi. Some little glitch with the wifi can be a minor hassle from time to time. Then there's the hassle of getting a new router and having set up the static addresses again along with a new IP address for the music library - yes my library is local but I want to access it from my chair so wifi is unavoidable. There's also updates to the likes of Volumio - either don't do them regularly and experience pain when you do or take them regularly with less pain until one doesn't work. The UI I have with JPLAY Femto is so very good that is is currently my preference, it's Bubbleupnp on my phone, this is the most stable so far but even so I couldn't give it anyone non-IT savvy. I can fix all the minor foibles but I spend my day in front a computer already...

I could run JPLAY Femto totally off grid but I'd then need go to the monitor and keyboard to get it to play music. It's finding the lesser of all evils - so far it's Bubbleupnp and JLAPY Femto. BTW my wifi signal is strong but there's also quite a lot of congestion so I end up playing with wifi channels every so often as the auto selection isn't as good as I'd like.

CDPs are easier but then huge CD collections are a hassle as is finding stuff. Oh it's just everyday life and I'm moaning about it....1st world problems!

Surely sampling is by definition being selective, and so what a waveform is doing between sampling points is disregarded, which of course raises the question of whether or not the sampling rate is high enough to present a facsimile of the original waveform which is indistinguishable from the original.

The period between the samples is neglected, and what occurs in the waveform in this neglect, cannot be even detected, let alone reproduced.

    Have you tried piCorePlayer?
It just works, and reliably so.

The issue with a number of server/client setups is that the interface goes to an offsite server, which then looks back down the connection for rendering devices on which to play the files.
Talk about long winded, and it's a dependent on that 2 way communication.
If the 2 way connection doesn't work properly the whole shebang goes tits up.

LMS on piCorePlayer deals with local files locally.
If you want to stream from a 3rd party content provider then you need a decent internet connection, but you really shouldn't need a decent internet connection to play local material.

I haven't tried piCorePlayer though have thought about it in the past. It's not the player stability that's the issue really, it's the networking if wifi is involved to a hand held GUI. Wifi was fine when there were only about 3 device in the house using it, now we have more like 15 to 20 connected, probably I just need a better router. But....that again is more hassle.

    Better routers cost bigger money.
ISPs don't send out routers capable of dealing with lots of clients simultaneously. They always send the least expensive device they can get away with.
Most of the IT companies I do infrastructure installation for use Draytek routers, and don't even bother unboxing the ISP provided kit.

Nearly all the network capable stuff here is hard wired, barring the Squeezebox Touch in my son's room, the Chromecast, the laptops, the tablets, and the smartphones, which amounts to 9 devices.
The Chromecast gets used in preference to the Virgin V6 box because the Chromecast blocks all the advertising. The Virgin box breaks up long Youtube videos with adverts.

always fancied my own router, but dont know enough about them to confidently play about so stick with the crap you get TBH, i dont get much trouble with dropouts etc. Laptop to RPI is all wired anyway. Ive got an ethernet switch as ive a few things on cables. Just my tablet and phone mostly that are wireless.

Agree about the ISP routers. Hardwiring is hard over 4 floors, I have some powerline plugs to use when absolutely necessary - they work very well but I don't want the pollution.

Is a digital life preferable to an analogue one?
