Default Opinions on Ultra Short Throw Projectors (the Mirrored type)

I've taken a punt on a BenQ MX850UST on the fleabay (got it for £115 with a nearly new bulb and remote)

Can barely find a bean about it on the net, in fact the only youtube vid seems to be a couple of dudes discussing it in Russian (or a language close to it) I get it's aimed at the education / business sector having 4:3 native res but with it's HDMI input and HD capabilitly I wondered if anyone's tried this or similar for tv / films / games?

Ultra short throw are OK, but there is a trade off in brightness measured in lumens and picture quality, if you're using it for TV you need to make sure it will take HDMI and remember that you don't want to run HDMI cables any more than 10m, also make sure you set it up 16:9 and use a fixed screen as these projectors don't work well with pull up or down screens

Thanks Mike. It's defo got HDMI amongst other computer inputs. I will initially see what it's like on a painted matt white wall but if it will see a significant improvement a screen could also easily be installed. I take it a standard white one with a 1 or 1.1 gain would work best?

I have personal experience of these type of projectors at two separate Art groups I belong to. Eventually the 'moving mirrors' fail and you will be left with open mirrors which give white dots on the screen and closed mirrors that give black dots.

Just had a read up on this.....so the dlp chip starts to fail and it can be replaced but on a discontinued product im guessing thats not so easy.

I will keep a close eye on this once i get it

That's one of the problems with budget manufacturers like BenQ when something goes EOL parts are almost impossible to get a hold of, the rule of thumb with most stuff like this is if it's out of warranty and it goes wrong it's probably cheaper to buy a new one

Yeah i doubt ill try to fix..ill be happy with a few hundred hours out of it.

Seller seems a specialist and refurbs them before selling on. Ill post a few pics once its set up.

Got an idea to bung a firestick in the back and try to power it from the projectors usb port. Have a nice self contained media display then (not sure if that will work but worth a go)

These still sell new for around the £1k mark but thats the business sector for you i suppose.

Chris you was spot on with this assessment. It did have black and white dots across the whole screen. Not noticable in light scenes but unbearable in dark scenes. Was not in the items description so sent back unfortunately. Got my eye on an epson ew th3200 now

I picked up the epson eh tw3200 in the end and painted a black widow screen of the dulux grey steel 2 and AAA variety on the wall. Very impressed with both.
