Oh, is it, I see . So the zero point on the Croft is 12 O,clock - got ya. In that case 2 O’clock is early in terms of volume adjustment.

Thanks to everyone who's replied. Lots of useful stuff.

It's true that midnight is 0, so 2pm is very early. It's too early for me, it takes some pleasure out of the interface between me and the amp and I'm sure it can't be helping the sound.

Very interesting to hear of experiences with tube rolling. A slippery slope I gather.

    If my main aims are:

    - Reduce Gain
    - Reduce Sizzle / Top end harshness
    - Spend less than £50 per tube on something readily available

    What would you suggest?

I know the top end should be there and it's true HiFi, but it affects my tinnitus, so it's either roll it off a bit or drop the hobby. The latter not an option!

It looks like the GE JAN 5751's might be a good call for my needs?

Hi Alfie, is this amp new, or just "new to you"?

She's new to me. Previously a demo unit at HiFi Hangar and then belonged to a chap on here for a bit before selling on to me.

Just wondered whether it might be running non-original valves already?

I have owned a Croft pre/power combo on two separate occasions since 2009 and on both of those occasions got pissed off with the ridiculous volume control or rather ridiculous volume no control. Aside from that, the level of detail that these amps reproduce is absolutely astonishing. I should add that I never found their sound harsh or anything like it but then I was using Gold Lion gold pinned valves.

I don't think so. I'll confirm this evening.

Can any of you put me in touch with a tube expert on here?

Thanks again for all the help

I have a few valves you'd be welcome to try. I sent you a PM.

Thanks Fiddlemaker, what a nice place this is! I'll find you on PM.

There are some NOS RCA 5751s on the auction site. Says "LC32" but I don't think that means anything? They're around £30 which is nice. Any thoughts from others on those? There is very little detail about them.
