This however is the issue I have always heard with DACs, they never seem to do the best of all worlds, usually veering towards either the analytical and hyper detail or slightly warm and congested - relative speaking.

Ladder DACs and FPGA DACs have the potential to move into the middle ground possessing both detail, soundstage and good tonal qualities. I have heard an FPGA DAC implemented with ancillary equipment which can do this. I would love to hear one of the TotalDACs from the French company as I believe these, according to all the reviews I have read, possess all the qualities we are looking for.

Herb Reichert mentions a description of one in this review. I have read many reviews on these TotalDACs and they sound ideal apart from the price!

Back to the PecanPi and Katana. A tough decision but maybe you might not go wrong with either although I would go for midrange tonal expression over detailed soundstage myself.

Of course vinyl can do both!
    Haha, yes, good old vinyl!

As you know, there's a lot of stuff not available to me on vinyl for reasons of either price or scarcity.

Digital has a role to play and these two are equally up to the task. As you say, it's a personal preference that will settle it SQ wise.

Excellent write up Oli . I've been waiting for this I'm with James on the superior tonality of the Katana . I would rather have that over detail retrieval every time . Thanks for taking the time to post this

    No problems Brian.

It's difficult to argue that to be fair. The only thing I can say is, I've listened to both and I'm still not 100% which way I'd go and be sure I'd made the right choice.

What we need is a best of both. The insight, clarity, 3D imaging, soundstage and channel separation of the Pecan and the Tone, Timbre and soul of the Katana.

    That's the dream combo.
