    Default Leak 2001 transcription turntable

Thought on restoring a leak 2001 transcription turntable is it worth saving?

I've been give one from a friend who's father past away last year it look to be in very good condition but the suspension is sagging at the back.

It looks well made and it very heavy the tonearm looks like some thing from Audio Technica.

I’ve only dabbled with these and not owned one of my own, but they’re pretty good. The problem is that the original suspension was based around gloop-filled spheres that eventually rot away and all the suspension fluid leaks out.

I’d have thought it was still well worth saving, however and you’re right - the arm is an Audio Technica AT1005.

In the early 80's the Technical Director of a large firm I worked for had one of these. As Beobloke says, the filled suspension spheres eventually leak. I replaced two spheres on his deck, very impressed with it's performance afterwards.

    Default Suspension spheres

The three suspension spheres are in good condition, one has a cracked filler plug that's leaking what looks like silicon fluid.

A replacement filler plug is not a problem as I can 3D print a new one.

I've check the weight of them two are 117g and the one that's leaking is 98g, so I need to know a simple way to work out the fluid viscosity?

Yes, it's a silicone damping fluid/ grease, makes a horrible mess when it leaks out!

Same/similar as used in the Townshend Rock damping trough then?
Used to be able to get this from chemists.

    Default Leaky bearing housing

The turntable has now been strip down pictures to follow as I rebuild it.

Bearing cleaned and check for wear all was ok

    Bearing 01.jpg

First problem is the spindle bearing housing leaks haha

    Bearing 02.jpg

The original thrust plate was held in with a circlip and sealed with wax

I'm proposing to drill a tap the underside of the bearing and fit a 6mm bearing end plate with a "O" ring and retained with M3 cap head screws.

    No more bearing leaks.
