Apologies about the conclusion I jumped to, the 'listed building' thing was mentioned earlier. I could have saved myself 30 minutes of two-finger typing if I'd paid attention.
Even without the need to replace 'like for like' in your particular property, those windows are still the way to go if affordable - as I said, they do look great.
Going sideways a little, I think there is something even worse than ripping out original features and replacing with modern stuff, and that's when you see new(ish) builds with 'period' features added to give the place some character. Those architects will be first against the wall when the revolution comes. Well maybe not worse, but probably as bad.
