National character: wot is it?
Anyway, I've been pondering. Is there such a thing as a 'national character' and, if so, what constitutes it? Is there such a thing as a typical Englishman, or Scotsman, or Welshman (leaving aside cross-breeds such as myself)?
In so much as there are stereotypical British values (tolerance, respect for the law, love of fair play) it seems to me that these are mostly self-declared, and honoured as much in the breach as the observance.

That said, there are obviously some based more on religious beliefs and political will. not sure they are national characteristics as such, as if these oppressive ideals were removed the people would soon change too(slowly tho)

Those values did exist. Certainly in England post WW2, when for instance, a burglary made front page in the local papers and murder front page in national papers. Things have changed.
