I know that the 405 is meant to work well with Tannoys - might be worth a punt?

Yes, the extra grip and transparency of the 405-3 helps combat the sometimes wooly bottom end of the 15 hpd. A std 405-2 can be a bit soft in the bass for the big drivers. I used one with a decent passive pre and got excellent results with 15 Tannoys.
