Default Grim statistics on retirement age and life expectancy

The data is very specific to corporate employees but quite telling all the same. Especially for me since it covers precisely the sort of corporate management where I’ve made my career. Whether data is similar for academics, small business owners or other walks of life, who knows ? - I doubt it’s been captured in this form as this was related to actuarial data gathering for corporate pension schemes.

As it happens I have precisely this calculation to make: maximise pension by working as long as possible, or go when I can when kids are finished Uni and the mortgage is paid off which for me should be around age 61 (just over three years’ time).

The numbers are pretty shocking though and might well have helped me make my mind up.

You can make pretty much anything out of statistics depending on what you look at. Doesn't make it correct, but just one way of looking at it.
No doubt tho that stress is one of the biggest agers and potential killers out but so is poverty

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Would be interesting to see the raw data if availabile even better a full statistical analysis ... I’m assuming that the 18 months post 65 retirement is some kind of median measure for how long these companies pay out pension cheques but you need to look at how clustered/spread out the data is or whether it’s lop-sided.. Pretty scary nonetheless.

True, best one I heard was that if your head is in a furnace and your feet in liquid nitrogen your average body temperature is within acceptable limits.

97.2% of statistics are made up on the spot.

The I portant thing to do is to plan to have something to do when you have retired.

I came to exactly the same conclusion as the article long ago Tom. The statistics for folk retiring near their pension age are shocking and it is working in these latter years that is the killer. I have a holistic attitude towards my body and mental wellbeing and I am sure retiring as young as possible is definitely the key to a long retirement as long as you have a) the cash and b) a plan of what to do in your retirement.

I have always said I would always rather retire young and poor rather than old and rich! My retirement age will be very close to 57 which is now not far away.

Good article and like it has for you, it has crystalised my thoughts about retirement.

talk about stating the obvious..sheesh...why has the age for retirement increased...The powers that be are not daft...they know fine well that being forced to work well into your 60's is going to have a huge negative impact on the human body, result, it'll kill you. Now they don't have to take care of you..simple.

I'm just doing what they are doing...stating the bloody obvious...

Cut your stress as much as possible, be happy with what you have, stop keeping up with the Jones's.

I'm exceedingly happy to say it worked for me, took early retirement and never looked back.

The stats certainly make you think.

Early retirement is the way to go, cut out all the un-nessassary expenses if finances are tight.

And if you Google search you can find quite a few studies that suggest the opposite.
