Nothing particularly difficult about cooking or home economics or basic accountancy (or anything else that one may want in everyday life). It's just a bit of common sense and a little application.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

As to why youngsters are poor at the domestic stuff, well there are take-aways every 10 meters, kids delivering pizza 24 x7 in most neighbourhoods, ready meals cheaper in supermarkets than you could buy the ingredients for and armies of people ready to clean your house for a lower hourly rate than yours. I'm not supporting any of this, just saying.
Lidl and Aldi are really good for somethings. Also Asda and Morrisons. There is an Aldi at Merrow, near Guildford, and Lidls in Leatherhead and on the way into Kingston via Chessington. I can't remember any Asda or Morrisons in the Guildford or Leatherhead areas. Morrisons have great deals on wonky vegetables - they're good, and not even particularly wonky! Sticking with branded goods at sometimes 2 or 3 times the price is bonkers.

Of course, Geoff, but you're part of a generation where such was instilled in you, as a matter of course from an early age, and common place. I can assure you, that isn't the case now. When was the last time you engaged with an *average* teenager, or someone under 25?

They've got no common sense now whatsoever. They can't 'problem solve', because they've never been taught how to! If it's not on Google, forget it...

Glad we instilled it in our kids, they all buy carefully and cook their own food. It's a delight this morning having breakfast with our youngest daughter in Florida to see her planning the next week's meals ready for today's shopping, mostly at Aldi's. And to see her hunting coupons.

She also keeps a spreadsheet for all her budgeting.

Thankful that she can do all this as they have to solely rely on her husband's salary as she hasn't got her green card as yet

Well that does not apply with my grand daughters. Both are independant minded enough to take things on. The eldest is studying marine biology, athletics, business studies and photography and the youngest is also doing athletics and martial arts. They are only fourteen and thirteen respectively. Neither is a 'snowflake' or unresouceful and both are confident and pushy enough when the need arises.

....which is why I used the term "average"

Clearly your and/or their parents influence on them, and perhaps that of their schoolteachers, if they were any good, has had the desired effect. What do you think happens, however, in the majority of cases these days, when that influence is absent?

You have to think in terms of the general public: your 'average Joe'. You or I (or our offspring, if applicable), or I suspect most folks here, aren't representative of that average.

Whilst some of them weren't too bad (although many though 'salt' was a subsitute for 'flavour'), the main thing we noticed was that our shopping bill was 20-30% higher then when we bought all the basics and cooked everything ourselves, as we would normally have done. At that time, we didn't shop at Lidl either, so our shopping billl has now dropped even further.

Therefore I get very cross indeed when fat, lazy sods appear on TV and whine about how they "can't affored to eat healthy food". Absolute B*ll*cks.
Indeed, but you have to consider the fact that a lot of folks simply don't know any better, and for precisely the reasons I've outlined: lack of education on home economics! If you don't know, you'll never learn...

Why do think there's such a proliferation of TV programmes on now, such as 'How to eat well for less', and currently, Tom Kerridge's 'Fresh Start'. where he's essentially teaching people, not only how to cook, but crucially, home economics: https://www.google.com/search?client...es+fresh+start

Watch any episode, and you'll see *exactly* what's lacking today in people's food education and ability to budget properly. Quite clearly, there are enough of them benefiting from such education, especially if you can spunk a 'superfluous' £10k a year in a supermarket, on utter shite, without even knowing it!!

So current levels of ignorance in that area suggest that home economics should be taught in schools, thus added to the curriculum accordingly.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
