Any Dr Who fans?

For me it was the Egyptian mummies in 'The Pyramids Of Mars'. Well scary.

One thing about those old Dr Whos; a lot of people got killed - especially UNIT soldiers and pretty much every minor character in every episode. The Dr would not usually solve the mystery until everyone except him and the companion were dead.

Check out some of those old Pertwee episodes like 'The Daemons' and look at the body count. UNIT must have had a higher casualty rate than a Japanese kamikaze squadron. You couldn't do that on a children's show now.

And everyone would always be blazing away with rifles and machine guns despite the fact that the monsters were always completely immune to bullets.

Star Trek was the same, if a character was wearing a red jumper their days were numbered.

...and any episodes involving the Daleks or Cybermen, from the Pertwee or Baker era. There were other good episodes too (such as The Arc in Space and Robot), but all of the above are what I'd call 'Proper' Dr Who. I also agree with the rest of your post.

As for the latest stuff, with the Leanne Battersby [from Corrie] lookalike, as the Doctor, forget it!! It's childish and banal, and a victim of 'all effects with little substance', and fatally also political correctness. The whole thing's an abomination, in comparison with what the show was like in its heyday. The vibe was much 'darker' and eerier then, which is partly what I loved about it.

Plus, the chemistry between a male Doctor and a female assistant, which was vital to the show's original success, is also now gone - and I'm not remotely interested in romance or (the wrong type) of humour coming into stories, either! It's all too 'Harry Potter-esque'... Quite simply, the current Dr Who is much more a children's adventure fantasy now, than a proper sci-fi series, and that turns me off.

However, the biggest thing that's missing now, for me, is the eerie music, expertly created by the BBC Radiophonic workshop, which once underpinned and added so much atmosphere to story lines, and completely gone now, much to the detriment of the whole programme, and also how they've fucked about with and ruined the theme tune

I was a massive fan. Dr Who, UFO, Space 1999 and Blakes 7, were among my favourite programmes, back in the day. I think you had to be a 'certain age', in the 70s and early 80s, for Dr Who (with Pertwee and Baker) to properly appeal and be scary. Too old, and you wouldn't really have 'got' it.

I was a massive fan. Dr Who, UFO, Space 1999 and Blakes 7, were among my favourite programmes, back in the day. I think you had to be a 'certain age', in the 70s and early 80s, for Dr Who (with Pertwee and Baker) to properly appeal and be scary.

aye, it was ok, and i remember it with first doctor as well(think it was Hartnell of carry on sargent fame). pertwee was decent too.
remember blakes 7. the sets and acting was so bad but it was compulsive viewing

They should bring Blakes 7 back. They could do it justice now that special effects are a lot cheaper.

aye, it was ok, and i remember it with first doctor as well(think it was Hartnell of carry on sargent fame).

Hartnell as the Doctor was stern stuff - the best IMV (although I liked Tennant's humour)

Was also scared at the time but could watch a whole episode OK.

Quatermass and the Pit (the TV series) was a totally different league - could only watch a reflection in a glass cabinet through my fingers while crouched behind the settee (quaking in me boots...)
