The difference is your Canadian house is probably quite modern with central heating and heavily insulated to protect against the fierce cold. Whereas my house was built in 1901 and only just about keeps the rain out which I'm guessing was pretty much the sole design criteria.

Gee Martin, that sounds quite uncomfortable. Nothing you can do about that? Insulation, stop air leakage, replace windows and doors...that kind of thing?

I already replaced all the windows with double glazing and draught proofed everything which did make a huge difference but if the temperature drops down to around freezing you still notice it. Go to brush my teeth and the toothpaste has frozen in the tube. Not had that for a few years now though.

On the plus side in that red hot summer we just had it's like having free air-conditioning. Stays nice and cool. Part of the reason is that the house is situated so that it never really catches the sun. At the time it was built this was not really considered since the sun could not make it through all the smoke anyway:

You could put some heating on... That's a rather radical concept, I know

Got a 1KW radiator on. It's not so bad at the moment actually.
