Even though I am sure it was his honest opinion and not under substances. I guess a guitar review would be a different animal but it just seems to me there would not be such a huge difference in tone from the same tube.
I agree if they are the same tube just one has gold plated pins it seems unlikely that there is any difference in how they perform regardless of the application. But musicians are just as bad as we are for this sort of 'angels on the head of a pin' stuff. So are a lot of the professional audio people - don't ever ask them about how recording desks sound different. If there's just one there you might get away with a ten minute lecture. If there's two or more they will argue the toss until the booze runs out.
    Current Lash Up:

    TEAC VRDS 701T > Sony TAE1000ESD > Krell KSA50S > JM Labs Focal Electra 926.

The funny thing is just how different the presentation is between the G.L. B59 and Tungsol , I did not expect such a complete difference between 2 12AX7 Russian tubes.
It also really forces you to make a choice, The B59 is so much more laid back and distant, The Tung sol is more like live music in a night club. Sounds more natural to me ,yet not neutral by any means.

The Tung sol is more fun to listen too. More engaging , piano keys just sing more and guitar strings are far more real sounding, bass is snappyer.

I'll take your word for it. I've owned very little valve equipment over the years and I've never tried tube rolling.

But in general I agree with the thread title, I read lots of reviews where I'm thinking 'Really?' about five times per page. I think it's the modern trend for having to be 'enthusiastic' or 'passionate' about stuff. That's for the salesman, not the reviewer. You didn't see that with the old reviewers back in the 1970s. They were jaded and cynical like any good reviewer should be.

I understand the paranoia Jeff, and it's hardly surprising given that you live in California, and absolutely frigging everything has a cancer warning on it.
If the review was on a guitarists forum just ignore it - the criteria by which things are judged is in a different ballpark, and neutrality and accuracy are not necessarily an element in the game played there.
