I took mine (and passed first time, naturally...) in my driving instructor’s 1987 Mitsubishi Colt.
It gave me an opinion of mainstream Japanese cars that I still hold today, namely that they are well designed, easy to drive and as dull as ditchwater!
My first car was a beige Vauxhall Nova 1.2 that I absolutely adored. I cherished it for 5 years before going right to the other end of the Vauxhall range and a 2.5 litre Senator! I saw the Nova about 5 months later - it had been in an accident and was smashed up. I was heartbroken.
Engineers: fixing problems you didn't know you had in ways you don't understand.

Passed my test in the instructors 1.1 MK1 Fiesta - a nippy car and a great view from the drivers seat, so easy to park etc (no power steering but they were light).
At the time of this I also had bought off my sister a Lada 1200 - loads of room inside and bullet proof mechanical's but rusted right in front of your eyes....

My first car after passing the test was a JPS Capri lookalike, nice at first glance but an utter pile of dangerous, rubbish and as it turned out a bent MOT. I didn't have it long though as it was stolen two weeks later and found written off eighty miles away. This wasn't it but gives you an idea why I fell for the mobile shed.

My Dad bought a new 1100 in 1964, in 1971 he replaced it with a 1300 automatic. About 1985 I bought a second hand Austin 1300 Vanden Plas. I rebuilt the engine/ gearbox and tidied up the bodywork. Gave this to him as a birthday present. It was a lovely car. Nippy too, engine was basically Cooper S. Dad died in 1991, in fact it's the anniversary of his death today. Stupidly, I gave the car away about four years ago.
