Gonna have to have a closer look now you've cut the legs off and soldered them in. Check the pic.
If you have a multimeter, have a check of the components around the illuminated LEDs and see where the electricity gets too.

You can check if the led are right way round without taking them out.
Study Oliver's diagram, anode=post and is +
Cathode=anvil and is -
You can see through the led and you should have facing the flat on the board.
It only takes 1 led to be in the wrong way per side to put them out

ok so finally had a look at the board and the leds are the right way around. Think I have teaches the limit of my non numptyness Any other ideas on what to test?

Double check you have the correct small fets or transistors in the right place.
