mmmm quads

mrdog has reglued all the stators; we're enjoying mono quad as i type. The second speaker is in process, one membrane is loose so that needs a complete rebuild. Should be done soon then i do the electrics, input caps, clamps, power resistors etc.

I must admit I fancy another pair of Quads sometime, probably 63s on stands (just because they are narrower).

It must be 5+ years since my last pair. It's like malaria, or Alfa Romeos, a disease of the blood that comes back at random intervals.

Anyone who says you can't use quads with subs, tell them bollocks. Dipole main sub + 1 other sounds superb, perfect fill in.

What a great project! I enjoy such things to do, and enjoy the results when you get it right. If I were replacing one membrane, why not replace both? I’d be afraid they would sound different, one with a new membrane and one with old, but I guess you can find that out before you get that far? I can’t wait to see them finished, good luck with it!

Didn't Celestion develop a dipole sub for use with the '63s? Can't remember what it was called though.

There was an article in a HiFi World DIY supplement waaaay back, for a dipole sub which was to partner a pair of Celestion speakers (I thinkj). I have it somewhere as I made one just to see what a dipole sub was like. It wasn't bad. I might make another during the winter as I had forgotten about these.

You're thinking of the SL6000 system which was the dipole sub-woofer paired with the Celestion SL600 speaker. Noel Keywood of HiFi World found the Celestion sub-woofers matched well with his Quad 63s. I think he used a pair of sub-woofers, one under each Quad 63.

I have played around with using a sub-woofer (a KEF design) with my Quad 57s - I just couldn't get on with it: either it was too intrusive, or had no effect at all. But it was a floor firing device and not a dipole design like the Celestion.

It was the sub for the SL6000 system. Most seem to refer to it as just the 6000 dipole sub-woofer. Intended for use with the SL600 speakers. I've seen them, but don't actually recall hearing one. Supposed to be very effective and yes, I've heard of them being recommended for use with the Quads. Finding one for sale might be tricky.

That's mrdogs room, he has 989s and subs, the middle 63 is the only one playing, were just testing it after a repanel.
