It takes me 50 seconds to reach the AoS site from switching on the computer: using a three year old HP laptop with an EE wireless 'dongle'.

I'm now confused about clicking, or not clicking, on in-post ads. Your comments contradict what Grant said.

It isn't complex in computing terms. You could program it on a ZX spectrum.

If you want ads to remain appearing in posts then click on them. If you want them not to appear in posts then don't click them.

Although I don't think that will actually work. In post ads are here to stay.

Lol.... It depends what you're clicking on. It's this simple:

If you want to try and 'convince' an ad box to appear somewhere else on the forum, then click the 'x' to close down that specific ad box. If you click on the ad box itself, you'll achieve the opposite, as you're 'telling' the software that you're happy where it is. If you ignore it completely, then you're not influencing matters either way.

Virtually as soon as I open my laptop, I'm on-line (must be significantly less than 10 secs).

Then I'll let the ad blocker continue to do it's job.

No, that's not strictly true. The only way to 'convince' the software to move an ad box, is to CLOSE it, not simply just ignore it. Also, in terms of in-post ads (or indeed any ads currently present on the site), they'll only be here to stay *if* the majority of folk either ignore them or open them, instead of closing them. Simples.

Of course, the best way of all is to permanently engage the use of ad-blocking software, and see HEE-HAW ads, EVER!

Also if you get a goole ad you dont like, then click the X to get rid. you should then get a couple of boxes. one is to ask not to get tht ad again. the other box should tell you why you got the ad and also how to change the behaviour of the ads for you.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

True - but you don't get the option not to have the ad (any ad) appear in future. I'll stick with the ad blocker.

Just ignoring them is best. Any reaction to the ad gives them data even if you click to close. All clicking to close will do is change your profile and the ad that you see, it won't reduce the number of ads you get. Since the middle man only gets paid by the advertiser if he gets hits there is no disincentive to discontinue the ads regardless of our reaction or non reaction to them.

No, but it *will* help to move the ad concerned from its current position (say within a post), if enough folks close it. That's precisely how it 'learns' where to be, and how the software works.

Therefore, if you genuinely want to influence the current positioning of ads, the ONLY way is either to close them or open them. Close = possibly 'convincing' the ad to appear somewhere else on the site. Open = 'tells' the ad that you're happy where it is, and we subsequently get approx 8p for the click.

Ignoring them completely simply maintains the status quo.
