The mat factors at work (dampening/muffling, isolating/static, soft/hard...) are complex (depending on the phono gear chain), one's use and to one's ear; subjective some.

So trials are still the best way to find out what suits best one ear and the phono chain. There is no universal absolute better when it comes to phono.

As about the thickness of the/your mat, don't forget that you can re-adjust your VTA accordingly if ever.

I got rid of my analogue gear earlier this year but up to that point I had a TD160 BC with a 5mm Achromat. It also had a solid maple plinth by Layers Of Beauty. Gorgeous deck.

Mine has a birch ply plinth from das accoustics in germany, via a nice aos member.
Really like the looks and sound.
I can see a cartridge upgrade looming. Ulp.

Stick to something light weight. Remember you don't want to upset the delicate spring system. Cork's pretty good. HAve you considered Oscar's GIMP mat? I use this to great effect on my Lenco 75. It's 3mm thick and worth the money just for the experimental fun.

Is the orginal thorens mat as bad as it's sometimes made out to be?

No it's just that it's been superseded by things that make the deck sound better.

No disrespect to anyone but I tried a cork mat on my TD160 and also a white acrylic one. Neither was a patch on the Achromat. Bloody expensive yeah but what a difference.

LOL, one of the reasons it is no longer for me. Too bloody old and far to bloody cynical.
