    Default Another question for woodworkers

Hi all, I am no woodworker so may not be on track here, but I have a piece of very rare, very hard, hardwood that I would like to turn into a walking stick. It will need straightening and general cleverness to achieve this which I am not capable of.
Can anyone here help with this or know someone who could? It's not time sensitive and I know it's not going to be cost effective, it's a sentimental thing for me, and for whoever might be interested a rare opportunity to work on a bit of wooden 'unobtainium'
    Cheers all
    James

Proper hardwoods are likely to be too brittle to make a decent walking stick.

Fruit woods often make best ones as they are inclined to have some give in them.

Yup. Sturdy limbs from wild fruiting trees like Blackthorn or Hawthorn make good sticks. Nice dense grain.

hard wood is ok; the likes of oak, ash and beech will work very well.

This has impeccable cultural provenance. The crooks produced have lasted for hundreds of years and are not available commercially.

Richard can do this for you , not much hope with your piece of wood as it will try and go back to its tensione shape , Best off starting with a recommended wood , ask Richard

Thanks Al, I'll call him when I get a moment.
Yes it isn't ideal but what I have is unusual and I have no need of a straight stick, just a solid one. The handle will need steaming or other bending to shape (I wouldn't have a clue how).

You haven't said what wood it is. Is that a secret?
