    Default Musical use and abuse

    Hi Guys

We constantly use and hear the word ‘musical’/ ‘musicality’ to describe the presentation of the sound pouring through our speakers, especially via vinyl. It’s become such a generic term and banded around so widely I thought it’d be interesting to ask what we actually mean by it? Can an adequate definition, as it applies to this hobby, be narrowed down and nailed?

Well Drew, for me it has to convey emotion. That's what it means to me. The ability to make me shiver or shudder with just three notes of a guitar for example. Sheer realism.

For me it would mean that when listening to a live recording made with real instruments it sounded as near as you would expect to hear if you had been at the live show. Musical nirvana maybe, but not impossible.
Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.

I think I am nearing audio nirvana, but don’t tell anyone.

I've never really understood what is meant by "musicality" - so I look froward to a definitive reply.

Involvement or emotional engagement goes some way. It also seems to be largely unconnected with cost: how many times have you heard something played on a cheap radio that has transfixed you or moved you to tears?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I tried one time to try and define what I listen for in music, so I guess the closer it gets to the centre of this, the more “musical” it is?

A mainly digital setup with a musical amplifier and endearing 1970's speakers. A CD player that hardly ever gets used and a turntable that is good enough to remind my how enjoyable my old vinyl is. Some cables and things.

Maybe musicality is there when you can just enjoy the music, without the playback system drawing attention to itself. Having said that, as music heard on a crappy transistor radio can have this effect, perhaps musicality is not a characteristic of the hi fi, rather it is built into the music itself, combined with our emotional state at the time.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

I would agree with all of that. Your last sentence reinforces what I said above.

That's where I copied it from! I've never had an original thought in my life!
