    Default Hello from a newbie

    Hello everyone,

I am Jerry from Preston Lancashire and joined the forum this morning after speaking to, the incredibly helpful and friendly, Stan Beresford about upgrades to my recently bought caiman SEG.

I was asking him advice about power amplifiers and he suggested looking around this forum so here I am.

I am more recently back into hi if and vinyl after a few years absence due to work commitments that have now subsided.

My previous system from 10 years ago involved a Garrard 301 set in a wooden and concrete plinth, Croft pre amp running into a Leak Stereo 20 and PMC speakers with ortofon mc transformers. Alot of that gear and other valve stuff was bought from Haden Boardman who I dealt with for a few years whilst bitten by valves.

I had to sell the gear to raise funds for a business I was co owner of and in recent times, this year, have dipped my toe back in the water and hence am on here.

I currently have a Regar Planar 1 and a Marantz cd 6006 CD player which is run through the Caiman SEG and then via a bantam gold amplifier driving q acoustics 3020 speakers. I also run a battery powered chrome cast through a Beresford switch box which then runs into the SEG.

I also have a naim muso and naim qb streaming tidal music around the house.

Music tastes are varied from Pink Floyd and Van der graaf generator through to Folk and musicals and currently Heavy Rock.

My immediate updates, I think, would be to run the SEG through a more power amplifier with a bit more grunt.

Stan is sorting me out with an upgraded power supply for the SEG.

Thank you and I would welcome any suggestions👍

    Hi Jerry. Welcome to AOS.

Shame you sold that older system, that was a nice setup.

Is there any particular reason you feel more power is needed to drive the 3020 speakers? 25 watts from the Bantam Gold should give decent loudness in the average room. Of course there's no harm in having a bit more 'juice' available.

Anyway, feel free to join in all the chat. There are friendly and knowledgeable folk here.

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.

    Thanks for the welcome Geoff.

It was a fab system and I have fond listening memories of it.

Current system seems a bit light on bass and I thought it may be the amp...having said that for the cost the bantam is pretty good.

Have you experimented with room positioning?

I have moved the speakers around a bit and they now reside about 10 cms from the back wall with a slight toe in. Moving them towards the wall certainly improved the bass...as a comparison the naim muso produces deeper and a much stronger bass. I was tempted with a naim nap 100 last week that was on eBay to but after the SEG.

Thanks Grant, I couldn’t believe how helpful Stan was in this age of appalling customer service and lack of customer contact.
I will be buying more gear off him
