Been reading up on Cabin gain in cars and long story short, every car is different and the position of the sub will produce different results. Here's a typical gain you would get:
You can achieve about 25db gain at 20hz. That's a hell of a lot. Put most car subwoofers in a home and they'd produce bugger all deep bass.
The fact that I don't know what my car is going to do with the frequency response of whatever sub I choose, coupled with the fact that I don't have any EQ, means i'll be buying blind, so I bought a brand new Rockford Fosgate 12" sub off ebay for £40. The sub gets very good reviews and it models with lots of punch (peaks at 60hz - assuming my simulations are anywhere near). With my current speakers I have to turn up the bass to +2 to get a balanced sound. looking at the Alpine head unit manual, the bass boost is at 60hz, so matches the Rockford.
If I don't like it, at least I can measure it, in and out of the car to find out what the cabin gain is. It was only £40 so not much to lose.

You're right. If my B2 sub was in the lounge, it wouldn't be any where near as effective. However, the hardest thing to reproduce in a car is extended low-bass, simply because of the lack of space for such low notes to develop, which is where porting comes in, and why my installer paid due attention to that key aspect of the build

Here's an interesting article on wavelengths in room. Long story short, you'd need a massive room to get accurate bass down to 20hz.
