Those concerned about the fact that cyclists don't pay vehicle excise duty might perhaps be reassured to read that they benefit the UK's bottom line in other ways?

(Nb. We pay no VED on our little VW up!, which was partly why we bought it. Sometimes taxes are there purely to raise revenue, sometimes they are also an attempt to influence behavior.)

Obviously 'Road Tax' doesn't actually go on the upkeep of the roads. It drops into a giant black hole at the Treasury along with VAT, income tax etc and then a tiny portion of it then goes on the roads. Probably not nearly as much as on MP's and the things that matter to them.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

T/T: Inspire Monarch, X200 tonearm, Ortofon Quintet Blue. Phono: Project Tube Box CD: Marantz CD6006 (UK Edition); Amp: Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated.
Speakers: Zu Omen Def, REL T9i subwoofer. Cables: Atlas Equator interconnects, Atlas Hyper 3.0 speaker cables

    T'other system:
Echo Dot, Amptastic Mini One,Arcam A75 integrated, Celestion 5's, BK XLS-200 DF

    A/V:
LG 55" OLED, Panasonic Blu Ray, Sony a/v amp, MA Radius speakers, REL Storm sub

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

Definitely an attempt to influence behaviour, my VED is £555 and if the same vehicle was available to by now it would be over £2k!

I can't read the whole article but I'm assuming in reaching that figure they are deducting the lost revenue from fuel, tobacco and alcohol and the cost of patching up all the cyclists who get squashed by buses and lorries?

The car makes no sense for certain short journeys and thats what needs to be tackled. We cant have exponential population growth and expect everyone to park a car on the street

Its just a nonsense and the wisdom is realising that it doesnt set us free. Just one breakdown will cause bottlenecks for miles.

The truth is that it is a ridiculous form of transport for inner city areas and the direct suburbs. Even in the 1980s If I wanted to be in the city centre for 9am I had to leave home at around 7am to ensure that I would be in work an hour early rather than late

Thats the issue but cyclists still get sneers from lazy car owners who think they have the right to drive at peak periods clogging everything up. It shouldnt be a right to lazily get in a car at 8.30am with no planning and join the jams. Many of them are doing 1 mile school runs which should be catered for by public transport bus lanes bicycles and skateboards

I strongly believe in a very high congestion charge which deters people from using cars. The car has had its day in that sense but the blind transport policy continues to pile them onto the roads. You wanna use your car in congested areas...you pay heavily for it!

I dont think its a right to commute in a car and a case should be made for whether your car is necessary or just part of the problem

You fell just short of hitting the nail on the head there. It's not the car that's the problem, it's the population size. There are 30 million too many people in Britain!

The population of this country was shrinking steadily until some idiots decided to open the immigration floodgates.

I didn't watch it because I can't abide the prick. You'll have to give me the gist.

Actually on second thoughts, don't bother.
