Good post, Steve. I concur entirely! As for this:

They often opened the emergency exit doors too, to let their mates sneak on. Sometimes they would flatly refuse to pay their fare and would challenge the driver to do something about it. Of course the driver couldn't - the kid wasn't going to leave voluntarily and to try to physically remove them constituted assault.
Clearly, those are just ignorant, spoiled brats, who've been brought up with no manners, and also no respect for public property. No-one's kids I know would behave like that, as they'd know better.

And if I'd done that when I was at school, it'd have been reported to the headmaster, which would've resulted in the belt or possible suspension - then once my dad subsequently found out, as the headmaster would've informed him, I'd get another belt/thick ear from him (probably harder, too), particularly as he'd have been made to pay the damage, and I'd never have dared do it again!

There's no discipline with kids these days, either at home or in school, and too much mollycoddling/pandering to their ever-growing more ridiculous whims - and *that* is one the biggest problems... As for 'school runs', they should only be allowed if kids live a certain distance from their school. If they're close enough to walk, then they should get off their fat backsides and do so.

It might go some way to helping tackle the current obesity epidemic!!

Is there really an 'obesity epidemic' or is it just more nanny state bollocks? They'll make up anything to try and get more control over people's lives. Who cares if someone is fat? It's entirely their business, and if they want their children looking like pudgy little chipmunks then that's their own business too.

Although there is a primary school round the corner from me and I've never seen any fat children on the way to and from it. In my day every class had to have a fat kid, it was the law back then.

Well, Stoke must be 'slim city' then, lol! There are plenty of fat kids (and adults) around here - and in many other places I've been to recently, around the country. People these days, in general, are fatter than ever, not just kids, due to a number of factors. It's not imagined or made up, with plenty of real statistics to confirm it. Just speak to any GP.

That aside, more kids today should be taught manners and respect, and how to behave properly in public, as there's no excuse whatsoever for the behaviour Steve described. That shit simply didn't happen in school buses in my day (which I used every day) - and if it had, it'd have been quickly stamped out.

No wonder we're breeding a nation of disrespectful, self-obsessed arseholes. You can see the evidence in the adults!

    Yes.

London is getting like the states. Chubby kids everywhere, with obese parents to match.

Not everybody is fat of course, but it is definitely on the up. Wander around any Tesco here on a Saturday and you'll see.

No-one moves enough these days (folk generally lead much more sedentary lives than they once did, especially kids), and combined with a diet of junk food, the inevitable happens! It's a simple enough equation.

Not just chubby, Geoff, but often grossly obese. There's plenty of time to be fat when you're middle-aged, but as a kid, there's really no excuse, as you should be active enough at that age to avoid it.

in big cities its more likely to happen. less playing outside etc and too many edible distractions. plenty other reasons too. I guess around here there are more chubby kids than there were in my day, but not an epidemic. Young adults tho, thats getting more like one.in the 20 to 40 group its commonplace to be fatter than the norm, to point its become the norm...especially in females

....with a propensity to wear the tightest-fitting leggings possible!

I agree with what you're saying about age groups. However, for me, unless there are valid health reasons, then pretty much from as soon as you're walking, until the end of your teens, minimum, you shouldn't be fat, as you should be active enough to avoid it. I used to eat crisps, sweets and drank fizzy pop all the time (as you know my dad had a chippy), but was as thin as a rake.

In both my primary and secondary schools, fat kids were in the extreme minority, but in recent times that situation has clearly changed. There are also parks in most towns and cities. When I was growing up in the south side of Glasgow, I was never away from them, playing football and all sorts (I was never in), so I don't buy the notion that city kids can't exercise.

They're too bloody glued to their phones and games consoles now, that's the problem!

Cities are more dangerous places for kids now tbh. Its the parents, that are either sedentary themselves or too busy working to take the kids out to play footie etc. my grandkids are out playing a lot but their parents take them out all the time to play football or swimming to glasgow and edinburgh etc. its them that are never in... poor souls are worn out with it but feel its their duty to support the kids and give them the bet chance, instead of just abandoning them to their own devices.

as for the leggings... very true... its almost hypnotic watching all the jiggling

No-one's answered the question as to why it matters. Even if there was an 'obesity epidemic', so what?

Yes there are plenty of overweight adults round here. Round everywhere in fact but again, so what?

I'm not fat - quite the opposite in fact, even though one of the girls at work calculated my calorie intake and it seems to average between 3000 and 5000 per day depending on whether I drink booze that day or not. Just lucky with the genes or something. But if I was fat then that's up to me. I pay doctors their wages to fix me if I'm broken not to lecture me about what I should and shouldn't be doing and certainly not to pass laws to stop me, or tax me if they don't like what I'm doing (God forbid it should make some work for them).

Of course it isn't about that, it's all about them feeling self important and righteous by telling the ignorant plebs how to live their lives. They need to shut up and get on with the job they're actually paid for.
