Default Marantz CD94mk2 drawer not opening

I've just started a new project - getting this classic CDP to work. I looked inside and the rubber belts have disintegrated. When I hit the open button there's a whirring sound for a few seconds but I can't see any wheels turning. I'm hoping new belts will sort this out and I've seen a few sets on eBay. Does anyone know the best set, and how easy is it to replace them?

They're a bit of a sod to replace and you'll need to keep on doing it - the damn thing chews through belts at an alarming rate! (Or maybe it's just mine...). Wonderful player, though, and well worth doing.

You can buy a kit from Thakker online for 16.99Euro so i would say that's as good a place to start as any.

It’ll be quite straight forward Lawrence, nothing to worry about

Thanks for the words of support Andy, I appreciate them. Is this based on personal experience as apparently this mech is a particular bugger to sort out.

Cheers Adam, I've bought the Thakker belts, I believe I'll need to clean the wheels with isopropyl alcohol, where do you get this from, Boots?

You should be able to get IPA from any decent pharmacy.

I believe so. Mine usually mysteriously finds its way into a bottle in my bag when I'm at work...

    Hi Lawrence

I've fitted a good number of Thacker belt kits to Marantz high-end CD players - there should be a very full thread on AOS to which I contributed some time two year ago. It's intricate work but not impossible. The one thing you must deal with is the tensioned wire drive which has to come off to allow access to one of the belts. Don't attempt this unless you have a very certain method of stopping the wire unravelling. That and the frustration of dropping tiny circlips into the heart of the machine...

You'd do well to check the foam bump stops and the foams on the clamp as these will have aged badly I guess. The mechanism sled can get badly fouled by degraded plastics foam so check the runners.

PM me if you want a one to one.
