I would be quite happy with a Denon DP-100, but with a different arm.

    http://www.thevintageknob.org/denon-DP-100.html

Although developed for the domestic market, the Denon DP-100M (a Denon DP-100 fitted in a bespoke plinth) was intended to be a valid competitor to the EMT 950 in professional broadcast studios.

Or, as mere caprice, I would try to seek out an EMT 927D (a precision built 927 for laboratory use with a glass slip platter, replacing the acetate slip platter) or an EMT 929F (capable of supporting two 12" arms); both with modern arms of my choosing.

Went for a reasonable price - despite doubts over the suspension. (About 50% more than I paid for my EMT.)

If I obtained a DP-100, I would replace the arm.

    Hi Barry,

I have the Denon DP-100M variant, which came with the tonearm. You are right about the unit in the Hifido link; the oil filled shocks and springs are missing, which is a pretty significant omission. The 40mm thick top plate sits on the spring/shock arrangement, to improve damping and stability. Over time, the shocks can leak, which I'm guessing is what happened here...worth trying to fix, I would say, as a DP-100 without this is severely hamstrung.

As for the turntable itself, it is quite a remarkable unit. The motor is the size of a sandcastle bucket, and handles the sprung/damped platter with ease. I built a surround for the turntable, as mine did not come with the optional DK-1000 surround. I used a Macassar ebony veneer with a deep gloss finish. It makes the turntable an even bigger beast, but there is no getting away from its size anyway, so in for a penny!

Sound - of the decks I own, it is ***probably*** the most accomplished, but I've never done a bake off using the same cartridge on the different tables, so I'd have to hold off on a definitive answer. Each deck does its own thing, but I like them all...the DP-100M is a pretty special beast, though.

I can't comment on the arm as such. It is beautifully made and has a more rudimentary (than the Sony Biotracer) form of electronic vibration damping , which I find has worked wonders with a Decca C4E I have on the deck at the moment. I have no doubt that a top modern arm would do pretty special things...or even something rare and beautiful like a Breuer...but the Denon arm is more than adequate for my needs. If I did change it, I would make sure it could be re-fitted properly. I found some images of a 100M, where the arm had - it would seem - been ripped out; wires cut in such a way as to make a reverse very difficult if not impossible. That said, if that's what you want to do to your own deck, then crack on!

I'll try to get an image uploaded...been a while since I've done it, so I need to refresh my memory.

Enjoying the thread immensely...some beautiful decks out there!

    Best Wishes,

    Paul.

    Hi Paul,

You are fortunate indeed to possess a Denon DP-100. Yes, we would love to see some photos of your DP-100.

When I said I would replace the arm; I would of course do it sympathetically as well as bypassing the built-in phonostage, such that both could be restored at a later date should I wish.

I have owned many of the Tom flecher turntables mainly in the 90s always enjoyed them I had the the Space and Hyperspace the mentor and a mentor reference I also owned a anna which I really loved, I remember fondly meeting Tom at the Penta Shows which then became the Ramada with martin bastin. During that period there were so many great turntables one could aspire to owning such as the Pink triangle anni and the rock reference the Alphason sonata. I remember Max townshend demonstrating a Rock Reference being played at 90 degrees. The turntable that sticks in my mind was the Goldmund st4 with a kisiki lapis lazuli it was truly glorious. These days because of such a small market the prices are insane.
