Damn! I was all set to book an appointment. I'm not shelling out extra just for a trim.

Who needs an excuse? One place I worked it was almost compulsory togo for a drink at lunchtime. Being a lightweight, I would spin out a pint as long as possible, but my boss could, and usually did, down four pints of Guinness. We had to make sure he wasn't left alone with any female colleagues in the afternoon.

I try to avoid it because once I start I don't stop. So I try to start as late as possible. Or not at all.

Fair enough. Only twice in my life have I been so drunk I've not known what I was doing. The second time ended very badly, so I now stop after three pints, which also saves me a lot of money, given the price of booze.

I may have told the story here before, but anyway ...

Drinks after work; had several pints too many and missed the last train home. Got the ferry, figured I could walk home from the ferry terminal, but a) wasn't sure of the way and b) was pissed, so I got lost. Walking by some waste ground, some bricks began landing around me, then half-a-dozen big skinheads jumped me from behind, knocked me to the ground and proceeded to kick the shit out of me. They also stole my wallet, with a week's wages in it. I had a big black eye, badly bruised ribs and a fractured wrist. It could of course have been much worse.

To add insult to injury, when I reported it to the police they suggested I'd made the whole thing up, having drunk all my wages.

Each to his or her own, and all that, but I've always found that a rather curious (most often British) phenomenon... May I ask why?

For me, as a continental, alcohol is to be enjoyed, not abused, so call me boring, but when I've had enough I always stop!
