Drinks after work; had several pints too many and missed the last train home. Got the ferry, figured I could walk home from the ferry terminal, but a) wasn't sure of the way and b) was pissed, so I got lost. Walking by some waste ground, some bricks began landing around me, then half-a-dozen big skinheads jumped me from behind, knocked me to the ground and proceeded to kick the shit out of me. They also stole my wallet, with a week's wages in it. I had a big black eye, badly bruised ribs and a fractured wrist. It could of course have been much worse.

To add insult to injury, when I reported it to the police they suggested I'd made the whole thing up, having drunk all my wages.

The same things went on in Glasgow too, back then, and I suspect in pretty much every other major city... The world's full of scumbags.

I've no idea. Extended boozing sessions were just part of the culture I grew up in I suppose. In the pub at lunch for 2 hours then back again at teatime, leave about 2 am.

Lol... So, now you've grown up, you just keep on doing what you've always done?

Creature of habit right enough, eh! I'm pulling yer chain of course, but at the same time I can't really get my head around it...

I went through a phase of leaving work at 6 'o clock when the pub opened and leaving the pub when it closed at 10:30.

It was a bit like the TV soap 'Friends' - the landlord would start pulling my pint when he saw me come through the door, and I used to have very enjoyable conversations with the other regulars.

I drastically cut it down when I realised just how much money I was spending, and, more importantly, there were times when I had absolutely no recollection of the night before, or even of how I got home. Fortunately I never misbehaved or embarrassed myself, and I always got home without incident; but it was enough for me to 'mend my ways'.

    Happy days!

I always know when to stop drinking.

Unfortunately, I know exactly two pints after I actually should have stopped...

Always interesting hearing those little anecdotes, Barry!

Can't say I've ever done that myself, but I think it's a lot to do with the fact that I've never lived alone, and always had a wife to come home to, for social/human interaction, etc, so have never needed a pub, in that respect, to replace that need.

Can't imagine you doing that now, aside from 'having mended your ways', with having met Happy?

Last of the hot days is the forecast. Back to normal temperatures and pissing it down by the weekend according to Carol on the babybee this morning. Prefer the warmth myself as I hate the rainy days as they always get me down.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
