Experience tells me that only the very BEST T/Ts are capable of that (when playing mint condition vinyl), whilst still excelling at all the things that, say, Jim values about vinyl replay, in terms of musical connection, emotion, etc. That's what I meant yesterday when I responded to your comment of 'trying to get a vinyl setup as good as a digital one', and what costs serious money to get right!

Essentially, you know that you've got a pretty special T/T when it majors on all the best aspects of digital replay, but still sounds, in a good way, like a turntable - *AND* also the other way round, when your CD player/DAC excels at all the usual digital traits (as mentioned), but majors on the addictive musicality of a good turntable.

Some of you have heard my T/T at NEBO, so know what that's like, but Macca has heard both vinyl and digital playback in my system, so he'll know where I'm coming from here...

    I like that idea.

Well, you'll learn something genuinely useful that way about digital and vinyl playback. Plus, trust me, it'll sort the wheat from the chaff, in terms of the T/Ts used, too!

Anyone one with Roy Orbison in dreams on vinyl, play blue bayou, it's a track with quiet passages that showcase Roy's voice, that in the room sound with reverb that sounds natural. Listening on Spotify it doesn't come close, lifeless and the reverb sounds fake.

I have fallen down that rabbit hole Marco where you can get vinyl and Digital to sound the same. The trick is to find a recording where this happens. I did this with an Agnes Obel album and could not tell the difference between the two, however on most other stuff when you compare the vinyl version to the digital version the differences become very apparent.

Spotify is lossy though and that is sometimes very obvious.

As well as vinyl Vs CD, a Raspberry Pi type device needs to enter as well, as Imthink that these are the nail in the coffin of the CD player.

Oh man I love that sentiment. That is exactly what producing prints in a darkroom is about. The prints I made were on Agfa Record Rapid exhibition grade chlorobromide paper that whilst still wet was archivally treated. I could guarantee that these prints would never fade in my lifetime or indeed any offspring's lifetime. I wonder how many people could say that about a digital print..? Maybe a monochrome print made using carbon based inks.

Lasting memories indeed, way beyond my lifetime.

My Technics SLP1200 will take the Pepsi challenge against that or any other digital set up. So would Marco's Sony R1.

And a very good thought indeed.
