Eye contact. I find eye contact goes a long way, makes you look interested, people like that. Especially important with women (Oi! I'm up here!) And as has been said before, make a mental note of who's next to be served.

Nearly 40 years since I worked in a bar (Addison's in Preston). Some real 'characters', had some fun, became top scorer on 'Asteroids' game. Eventually the old geezer regulars started to get on my wick (they would demand their drink and chuck the money (usually a shit-load of coins) on the bar, for me to scoop up, and when I was giving them their change they would expect it placed in their hand. So it was punch someone's clock or jack the job.

So a tolerant nature would be another big plus!

Oh and don't be getting pissed while working, the management don't like that.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

One main thing for me is mega-important, and which no-one has so far mentioned, and that is.... Don't be too preoccupied with simply serving drinks, to FORGET ABOUT CLEARING AWAY THE EMPTY GLASSES!!

Nothing roasts my dome more in a pub, particularly places where food is served, when you can't find a table to sit down at that isn't strewn with dirty glasses, plates, cutlery, bits of spilled food - so yes, WIPE THE TABLES CLEAN, TOO!

Basically, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness around the bar area itself and the accompanying tables, for me is a big thing, so customers can walk in and immediately sit down at a nice clean, tidy table

Just to clarify, Martin, will it be somewhere you'll be serving food? If so, there are plenty of other things I'll mention.

Also, if it's a pub that serves various kinds of real ales, then get to know what each one tastes like, so that you're able to explain to customers who ask before they order it. That's a service I usually need, as I like trying different local ales, and so often don't know what they're like until I try them.

I'm not a creature of habit who drinks the same shit all the time. Basically, I rarely know what I fancy to drink until I get there. The same also applies with wine. Get to know the different styles of red and white wine you're serving, which ones are drier, heavier/lighter, more acidic, fruitier, etc, so you can advise anyone who asks.

That'll do for now. I'm sure I'll think of more!

It's not uncommon nowadays, when requesting a glass of Merlot, to be asked " er...is that red or white?".

To which the usual answer is 'yes'.

Quite simply, it's fundamental. The job of bar staff is to clear up as well as serve, and often the former gets forgotten!

Firstly, if I can't get a seat at a table in a pub or bar (as I want to relax, sit down with my wife or friends and have a chat, all together), I'll walk out, and secondly, if there are no clean tables free, I'll likely do the same, as I don't want to be sitting in among someone else's mess.

Oh FFS, such ignorance is inexcusable!

Golden rule in sales (and yes a barman is essentially a sales job), always know your product.
