I was alternating between the Rangers and Aberdeen game. Aberdeen did well and were unlucky. They had their chances, but in the end Burnley had just a bit too much quality. Hibs pulled of a fantastic result!
In terms of Rangers, this is the first time I've seen them play since Gerrard took over, and although they're still very much 'work in progress', I'll tell you one thing for sure:
no way will they be getting humped so easily by Celtic this season...
They're MUCH more solid looking and organised than they were last year, and as such less prone to losing silly goals. And in Allan McGregor they're got a top-class goalkeeper (he was precisely that too, last time he was at Rangers, now more experienced), and he made some great saves tonight, to keep Rangers in it against a Croatian side who were defo no mugs.
Katić scored a good header and was impressive throughout, with his positional sense and distribution of the ball, and I was also impressed with Kent, and his delivery of the ball from set-pieces, especially corner kicks. I can see the team scoring a few goals this season from his wickedly whipped-in corners! I was also impressed with the way Rangers pressed the game and the high tempo they played at.
Downsides? The defensive organisation at times lacked cohesion and some of the defending itself was a little naive. Tavernier is not a natural defender and much more suited to going forward, where he can be a threat down the wing. And at the other end of the park, aside from Morelos, I don't see any prolific goal scorers, who can get 25-30 goals a season, unlike Celtic have in abundance, and even Morelos himself blows hot and cold, so for me that's something they'll need to address if they're seriously going to challenge Celtic for the title.
That said, I'll confidently predict that Rangers will be up there this season, beat smaller teams that they struggled to do last season, and will give Celtic, especially at Ibrox, some tough games! Can't wait until it all kicks off this weekend!
Marco.
