Does anyone remember, ooh, must be about 20 years ago, an MP being appointed Minister for Drought, and immediately the rains came. He also at some point was made Minister for Snow just before everything thawed. It made him a figure of fun. I'm sure I didn't dream it.

That's what we need - a man of action!

That was Dennis Howell in 1976. A bit more than 20 years ago I'm afraid.

It's gonna be a roaster today. 35C predicted here, which means more likely 36C will be what we get. They always underestimate. Even hotter tomorrow, we could see a new temperature record. I'm dreading it as I hate being too hot!

If I get too hot, I'll do what I did yesterday and soak in a coolish bath for a while. It works!

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Dropped Mrs. B off at Heathrow this morning as she had a day trip to Frankfurt for work. Apparently her plane got halfway there and then turned back with a technical fault and she couldn't get any other flight today to be in time for her meeting.

As a result, she took the tube into Waterloo to get a train home. She said the tube train was so hot she felt sick. God knows what the temperature inside it was.
