when the other staff are winding down and partying Im usually sober as a judge (on duty) which is a real bummer I can assure you. I am allowed one beer on a busy night and I will try and enjoy a cigarette. Im gonna have a ciggy.
Theres nothing worse than sitting down with a bunch of merrilly drunk and drugged colleagues when sober as a judge....nothing worse in a social situation
Its a way of joining in and its also a hit when work is stressful. I dont want to smoke and do have periods when I just dont enjoy them and give them all away. Its a very social thing with me and usually accompanies alcohol
So I know they are dangerous to health but I fancied a young lady there and she smokes so I thought F it Im joining in
I still believe its 90% peer pressure, trying to be cool and then the addiction takes hold in many people....it is a filthy habit and theres no denying that
Martin, I sympathise with you, I too can't stand to be around pissed people - even if they're 'happy drunks' they just get on my nerves. The answer would seem to be to get drunk too, but I don't do well with alcohol, I don't enjoy it much and hate the after effects. To help me cope in these social situations my booze substitute used to be pill-shaped and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It was an alternative which became very popular, probably still is, but I'm too old now for all that nonsense. So these days I'm just a boring old fart and stay away.
If having a cig helps you cope, that's great, you just have to be mindful of the insidious nature of nicotine addiction - nobody thinks they're addicted until they are, and even then they will deny it - much like alcohol. Personally I enjoy smoking and I'm not a 'heavy smoker' by any means, but I'm under no illusion - I am addicted to it.
