Lol.... I can honestly say that wine has *never*, to me, tasted like piss, because I've only ever drunk good stuff! And that doesn't necessarily mean expensive either. I was fortunate as a kid to taste red and white wine, produced by my parents and relatives from our own vines in Italy, and which was just wonderful (and also free).

No doubt that developed my taste for fine wine later in life, *but* it didn't turn me into an alcoholic!

Dunno. Never tried smoking cabbage. I do remember smoking some mysterious green stuff that could have been confused with cabbage I suppose. Quite enjoyed that.

Lol... You can see my point, though? I think that some people are just more predisposed to being addicted to things than others.

Sorry, not havin' that. The implication there is that the reason why kids wouldn't like the taste of wine is because the poor buggers were given the crap stuff. Wine comes under the category "acquired taste" and I don't believe any child would walk past a bottle of Tizer to get at the vino unless it was to do as the grown ups do.
Like dressing up in mummy's frock and shoes.

Is it not possible that the passage of time has given you rose-tinted specs, and you remember the wine tasting soo good, (and the summers were sunnier and the winters snowier) or maybe your memory is slightly addled by 51 years of plonk?

I've just read this through and it looks a tad confrontational. That's not my intention, It's just banter, so no need to club me with one of your (many) empty bottles.

My mother was French and I grew up being given the occasional glass of watered red wine with meals as a kid. Never liked it and still don't. I can cope with a clean tasting dry white wine though.

I hold living in France responsible for my father becoming a raving alcoholic. He was a Routier ( lorry driver) , I’d often go off with him and lunchtimes were a huge affair in the truck stops , you’d have tables of about 20 truckers sat together all eating from a fixed menu accompanied by jugs and jugs of red table wine , thought nothing of it back then but can you imagine nowadays.

Ha - the point is that when I was growing up and first tasted wine, when I was 5 (during the 70s), the stuff that the general public had access to *was* piss! Blue Nun, anyone?

However, as a result of my Italian heritage, and the fact that we had our own (small) vineyard in Italy, within the family home, I was always used to drinking good (genuine) wine, and not plonk.

*Plus*, very crucially, we (Italians) very rarely drink wine without food. It's enjoyed as an accompaniment to a meal. And red wine especially with food, tastes VERY different than when drunk on its own, where it can taste like piss (rather vinegary), especially if it *is* piss!

Therefore, when I first tasted wine, as a kid, all those factors would've come into play (plus it was mixed with a little water, and so diluted), not least of which the fact that it would've likely gone very well with some gorgeous homemade pasta..... As ever, context is everything!
