“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

In my case - not in the slightest.

I did try a roll up a few months back, got less than half way through and had to bin it ... tasted vile.

... and that's from someone who smoked tabs for 55 years (and loved it...)

That's the thing for me with smoking. Did it taste anything other than vile the very FIRST time you tried it? Think about it... Back then, your taste buds were as unaccustomed (probably more so) to the taste of cigarettes, as they were at the point where you've just stated it tasted vile, after having given it up for so long.

I don't know anyone, when they took their first draw of a cigarette, behind the bike sheds at school, at a party, or wherever it was, who said: 'Oh my, that tastes gorgeous!'

I certainly didn't - it tasted VILE, which is why I stopped there and then, and didn't develop it into a habit. And I was never one for succumbing to peer pressure. The fact is, it ONLY tastes good once you've become accustomed to the taste, and then hooked on the drug.

The trick, therefore, is to stop at the first stage of it tasting vile, just like you would with anything else you hated the taste of!

Same thing with beer. As a kid, I never liked the taste and couldn't figure out why adults liked it.

I gave up 7 or 8 years ago using the Allen Carr Easy Method (not the comedian Alan Carr). It is a mix of CBT and NLP. I never touched a fag again and was up to 40 a day.

It’s not for everyone but you don’t need will power and if it doesn’t work you get your money back. You have to be ready to give up though.
