For cabbage haters, or those who can't master the steaming process, here's a nice way to cook it, and which may change your mind towards eating it: https://www.foxandbriar.com/easy-sau...abbage-recipe/

Note the author's previous feelings towards boiled cabbage!

Plus, what can also transform cabbage, and give it a different flavour entirely (and texture), is pan-frying some lardons and stirring them in at the end, especially when sautéed, then drizzling a little of the hot bacon fat over the cabbage, before serving. Cabbage and bacon, quite simply, is a marriage made in heaven. Gorgeous!

Ive just bought a pack of Benson Gold and I will tell you why.

Ive never really got addicted to them and can be a social smoker with very long breaks inbetween times. I havent even touched this pack yet and Ive had it for nearly a week.

when the other staff are winding down and partying Im usually sober as a judge (on duty) which is a real bummer I can assure you. I am allowed one beer on a busy night and I will try and enjoy a cigarette. Im gonna have a ciggy.

Theres nothing worse than sitting down with a bunch of merrily drunk and drugged up colleagues when sober as a judge....nothing worse in a social situation

Its a way of joining in and its also a hit when work is stressful. I dont want to smoke and do have periods when I just dont enjoy them and give them all away. Its a very social thing with me and usually accompanies alcohol

So I know they are dangerous to health but I fancied a young lady there and she smokes so I thought F it Im joining in

I still believe its 90% peer pressure, trying to be cool and then the addiction takes hold in many people....it is a filthy habit and theres no denying that

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

At work I always like to smoke standing next to a no-smoking sign. Fair enough that you can't smoke inside, but telling you where you can and can't smoke outside is taking the piss.

Martin, I sympathise with you, I too can't stand to be around pissed people - even if they're 'happy drunks' they just get on my nerves. The answer would seem to be to get drunk too, but I don't do well with alcohol, I don't enjoy it much and hate the after effects. To help me cope in these social situations my booze substitute used to be pill-shaped and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. It was an alternative which became very popular, probably still is, but I'm too old now for all that nonsense. So these days I'm just a boring old fart and stay away.

If having a cig helps you cope, that's great, you just have to be mindful of the insidious nature of nicotine addiction - nobody thinks they're addicted until they are, and even then they will deny it - much like alcohol. Personally I enjoy smoking and I'm not a 'heavy smoker' by any means, but I'm under no illusion - I am addicted to it.

Yup, and therein lays the key! *You* are in control of it, rather than *IT* being in control of you. It's exactly the same with alcohol. Enjoy both responsibly, and you'll be fine. However, one of the most important things in life is to feel happy and contented, as it's good for the soul, so you need to be able to know HOW to enjoy yourself, too!

At the end of the day, we all have our vices

I still believe its 90% peer pressure, trying to be cool and then the addiction takes hold in many people....it is a filthy habit and theres no denying that...
That's the indisputable truth! Luckily, even as a teenager, I never felt a need to 'follow the herd' or be part of 'the gang', in order to feel accepted, and instead was happy to do my own thing, and be accepted for it or not.

Having the desire to be independent instilled in you [being an individual, not simply a 'number'], at an early age, is actually very important for later in life, in terms of not being easily manipulated or controlled by 'the system'.

That's something more parents today should consider instilling in their children, if they want them to grow up with minds of their own. It's one of the reasons why I'm unwilling to entertain the subliminal mind-control/brainwashing, continually being drip-fed to us today by 'the system', others are seemingly only happy to accept.

Or perhaps they don't even realise that's what is happening....?

As a matter of interest would you smoke in the grounds of a hospital though with signs all around forbidding you to do so ?. The other day I saw around a dozen people smoking
at the Royal Free in Hampstead in a smoke free area ! Amazing. Later that day a similar number were standing there non smoking !. So clearly a case of it only takes one and the
    rest follow like sheep.

Yes, have done, and at the airport too. If they seriously think I'm going to walk half a mile to have a ciggy they are out of their tiny minds. If you're outside them it is going to have zero chance of affecting anyone's health but your own so there is no justification for it beyond persecuting smokers 'for their own good.' And that sort of attitude makes me want to start punching people. I know that's wrong but it's the first place I go.
