Is there an equivalent-value/quality dac around? To put together a 'cheap as....' set-up.

Just be aware that the early ones with
Germanium transistors have a tendency to fail quite violently!

Lot's of satisfied customers for this:

This is the updated version with a headphone section. I've got the older version which is identical minus the headphone section (also still available if you prefer).

DSD, USB Asynchronous, Coax, Toslink, compact. Great Dac, very neutral.

Or even cheaper one (but probably not quite as good sounding) I haven't heard this one though but probably similar sound signature.

Budget DAC -- +1 for the Topping D30. Amazing thing.

No, Bev, I hadn't heard of them before Jake (lordmortlock) acquired one and seemed deeply impressed.
He's still having his valve love-in and I bought it from him on the condition that I give him 1st refusal to buy it back if I sell it on!

Weird looks. Seems like a rather large Lego brick to me.
Crayon - weird name, I wonder what's behind that?

Only had it switched on for about half hour but very impressed so far.
A lot of kit gets the thumbs down within the first minute, but this one raised my eyebrows in a good way! A bit of an "Oooh, that's nice" moment.
Hugely "musical" - whatever that means.
Very clear and lucid throughout the range - bass is deep, taut and powerful, bit of a shock actually given the meager power rating (28wpc into 8 ohms, I think).
Soundstaging might well be astonishingly good but I'm gonna need a while to get my head round it all, I think.
