    I would turn the meters off - they serve no purpose and are distracting.

    Well I'm unlikely to use an amplifier fitted with meters, so I'll never know.

    Ever come across one Adam?
    That would make a nice vintage review.
    Is that one in the HFN&RR “vault” by any chance?

    It's a well known rule of audio, the bigger the meters, and the higher the proportion of the fascia they take up, the better the sound.
