A year ago they were cheap as chips, but more than the A&R A60. Not now I fear, due in no small part to "us" online bods..
It's a good amp, but not a great one IMO. Under a ton, it's not bad, but it has distortion and, IIRC, it can be speaker fussy to give of its best, getting "ssspiteful" if you get it wrong.
Didn't stop the likes of HiFi dave & I up-selling from 4040's though - and we sold loads at the time..

Loads and loads and loads....
i was lucky enough to have an mk2, which truly amazed me of the time (~ '94-ish). also, after re-capping it it performed extremely well sonics-wise ridded off that (occassional) uneasy glare, and is still in service at a friend's working flawlessly and beautifully... - a great THANK YOU, and a testament, for Mike Creek

Just discovered after two years of ownership that my late series 1 4140 has
switchable MC phono board!!
Now using quite nicely (on a part time basis) with Ortofon Rondo Bronze............
What was the capping you mentioned Trane?
Pete.
all the elko and polystyrene caps were replaced for betted (sound) quality ones> mainly blackgates and polypropylenes (wima mkp10 and mkp4 - the latter used where space was limited)
