Thumbs up Goodbye Moode, hello OSMC/Kodi [with a Raspberry Pi]

With the latest version of Moode needing 'built' and generally being a PITA to set-up, Duncan visited today and got me up and running instead using OSMC with Kodi, on the Raspberry Pi, so now the Pi is connected to the HDMI port of my Sony AV amp, which then uses its inbuilt DAC, instead of the IQ Audio one.

The resulting sound is superb, and like Dunc (as I also have a Sony TV and remote), I now use the one remote control (the one for the TV) to control everything, accessing music files, adjusting the volume, etc, so no need anymore for using the laptop to control my music streaming

It also means I can now access 100s of hi-res movies and 5.1 DTS music videos, which were already stored on my hard-drives, but that I couldn't play because the IQ Audio DAC wouldn't support them, and some of the stuff on there is amazing!

Anyway, thanks go to Dunc for his efforts. I'd definitely recommend this set up to anyone else using a Raspberry Pi and looking for an easy to use and intuitive interface with which to access their stored movie and music files

    Hmm. Looks interesting.

So, let me get this straight.

You plug the pi in to the av amp via the HDMI then out of your AV amp via the HDMI to your TV whilst the sound (from the av amp) goes to your croft preamp?

    Is that right?

    Hi Jo,

There's no Croft in the equation. This is for the downstairs system, and the Sony AV amp there is an integrated design.

Therefore, the Pi is connected to the Sony, via and HDMI lead, into one of its inputs, and it then uses the inbuilt DAC, as opposed to the IQ Audio one, thus taking advantage of the amp's linear PSU. The Paul Hynes PSU is now solely powering the Pi.

The Kodi interface is a joy, especially in my set up, with being able to use the same remote control for my TV, for accessing the 37,000 albums I have stored on my 'Personal Clouds' - so much quicker and easier than sitting using a laptop!

My NAS drive has a built in computer with HDMI and USB connections so it can be used as a desktop computer as well. I used to run Kodi on it and use a windows PC media remote to control it. Really good set up and I only changed to the Pi with Volumio because I thought the audio was output via USB was limited to 48k. It turned out anyway that it was my DAC that was limited to 48k via its USB, not the onboard computer of the NAS drive.

The OSMC/Kodi combination, Paul, with a Raspberry Pi, is just brilliant. So simple and intuitive to use. It's what 'non-techies', like me, have been waiting for, for years, as once set-up, even your granny could use it!
