    Default Hi-Fi Cock-ups. What's Your Biggest Disaster?

I suspect most of us have had 'incidents' when messing about with equipment. Tell us about anything you wish you'd not done or about any spectacular disasters that have occured.

I lent a very nice Audio Concepts Legend P300 MOSFET power amp to a mate to provide sound for a big party. The invited prat of a 'DJ' managed to connect the speaker outputs to the mains while nobody was looking at what he was up to and fried the feedback boards. The amp survived after a bit of first aid, which is less than can be said for my mate's Harbeth HL Monitors. The cones were literally blown out and coils melted. I saved the day by popping back with my Tannoy Eatons which gave good service through the whole night.

I also nearly killed myself tinkering with an old Teleton reel to reel recorder. I was reaching inside the back to adjust something and got an almighty electric shock. I'd forgotten the first rule. Disconnect the damn power!! Lucky my elbow earthed against the steel frame, so the rest of my body didn't get fried.

I blew up a pair of rather rare and now quite valuable full range Whitely Stentorian speaker drive units by putting too much power throught them. I wasn't going very loud, honest!

You should have told the missus it was a ZYX Omega and got two and a half grand out of her!

Done the same thing myself. I obliterated the stylus on my first DL-103 with a duster!

I once sold a good amplifier very cheaply because I thought it didn’t work.

Later I realized that it didn’t have the links between its pre and power sections fitted...

I did the same thing - gave away a NAD C370 that had an intermittent left channel. All it needed was a new connector between one of the pre-amp boards and the main amp board, which NAD fixed for free.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Using headphones while drunk, trod on the cable and snapped the adapter leaving it in the amp, took ages to get it out, I've done this twice. I only really use headphones when tother half's having an early night
