Default *FREE* Sony STR-6055 Vintage Receiver NOT WORKING

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT WORKING. DO NOT PLUG IT INTO YOUR SPEAKERS UNTIL MENDED!!

Nice old Sony receiver that if working, I believe are well thought of. Lovely build quality - the internals of the switches are beautifully engineered etc.

It worked briefly when I first plugged it in but now only emits a series of worrying cracks, pops etc.

I have removed the internal fuses to use in something else but it is otherwise complete.

Sadly, I don't have the skills to repair it and I don't think it would be economically viable to get someone else to do it for me. Much too nice a thing to go to the tip though.
Cosmetically, the front panel is very good. The top is a bit tatty but looking at google, there seems to have been an optional wooden sleeve you could get (this one doesn't have it).

So if it's any use to you, come and pick it up from just outside Bicester (M40, J9) - sooner the better. If you fancy bringing me a cheap bottle of wine to soften the pain of what I bought it for (it was working then!), so much the better but it's entirely discretionary. I'm just trying to save it from scrap.

Hi Geoff, I've had stuff off you in the past so let's turn this on its head:

If you can get this up to me I'll give it a service, throw in a bottle of plonk and it's completely reversed

As you say far too nice to scrap.

That's very generous of you Alan. Thank you.
    I'll drop you a PM.

I'll find something else to put on here instead!

Sadly, despite a couple of attempts at repair, this is still poorly so if anyone wants it, please come and pick it up.

I use the very same unit in my listening room. I would have it and get my mate to fix it but too far for me to collect. So did Alan try to fix it?

I did find a capacitor that was breaking down in the ancillaries power supply section, perhaps there are more?

Usual problem of tracing an intermittent fault

Yes I can imagine what a problem it could be. I've spent many an hour trying to fault find vrf air conditioning systems and water chillers. The old chillers had step controllers and it was a case of bridging out switches and sensors until the step controller went through its sequence and finally continued to run. The new stuff is electronic but even now not always as clever as they need to be and tell you where the problem lies.

Do you know Kevin Green in Bicester? He works on old Audiolab / Maclaren kit but can look at this for you. He doesn't charge too much for great results.
