My copy is hard back, I think it's both volumes in one.

    Sounds right up my alley!
You're welcome. Hope it works for you. I like Geoff Dyer very much as a writer; this was the first thing of his I read. He's very good on photography - there's a nice deconstruction of a Milt Hinton photo in But Beautiful - and his book on Tarkovsky's Stalker (called Zona: a book about a film about a journey to a room) is outstanding.

Yes, Milt Hinton the bassist. I haven't seen many of his photos ... This is a lovely shot of Red Allen, Ben Webster and Pee Wee Russell killing time before a TV studio performance:

Yes, he was very well known for his photographs.

I have a book of them somewhere, but can’t lay my hands on it right now.

What is so great about many of them is that it isn’t the usual stuff of someone playing on a stage with a sax in his mouth etc etc, with a photographer crouched down just below the stage.
Because he would often be on the gig, he has access to places and situations that normal photographers never see.
So, you see pictures in the dressing room of someone snoozing, or with a fag dangling from a mouth, or three guys sitting 3 feet away from, and checking out a guitarist, playing the chords to a tune they are about to play. Etc etc etc
Fantastic, natural, unposed photos capturing jazz giants, in normal situations.

Well worth looking for his photos.
