    Default Why are you here?

I asked myself what I get from my time spent online the other day. Suffice to say I've decided to spend less time online as a result. I won't be spending less time here though, because I enjoy searching through the archive for the myriad of interesting topics, reading people's hifi blogs and enjoying the general banter and atmosphere. AOS has to be the most knowledgeable forum as far as I can see and I feel that I get value from being here.

What does AoS do for you?

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I don't do anything on-line except this. I like the easy-going nature of everything and there are plenty of people who know a lot more than I do.

My friend Rob recently gave me the HiFi bug. Although I am on the budget end, HiFi-wise, it is nice to read what people have to say. The archive section is pretty amazing.

Plus you can get introduced to artists you have never heard of.

Oh, and I am now called a Senior Member after 100 posts - makes me feel special

I must admit, I also like "show us what you look like" and I just love seeing pics of people's systems and especially their listening rooms. I also feel comfortable posting here. It's not acceptable here to insult or attack people just because they like something you don't, or vice versa. That's the way it should be everywhere but it nobody seems to have told some of the folk on other forums

Oh, and I also like the fact it's a place where artisans can come to, contribute their knowledge and also hopefully sell one or two very interesting bits of kit you can't find in the shops.

The site has evolved over the years but its still basically AoS. A friendly group of nutters, and Marco is determined to keep it that way. The day it stops being that is the day I will leave

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

You just prompted me to look and see how long AOS has been going. Opening post seems to be Jan 2008. I wonder if there's going to be a 10th Anniversary celebration? Might be a nice idea.
