The worst thing about prison. and indeed the main deterrent for not going there in the first place, is your loss of freedom and separation from your family/loved ones. For anyone who's not a seasoned criminal, with a normal life otherwise, *that* is the main punishment, and likely why it wasn't much of a 'holiday' for the folks you've mentioned above, regardless of TVs and games rooms.

Others, however, who have no such normal lives and no families, are often happy to go 'inside' [indeed will often commit crimes precisely with that intention], as essentially they get free lodging/entertainment, and the opportunity to hang out with others in the same position, so in general, see it as a bit of a 'jolly'.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Had "opportunity " to visit the cells below the Old Bailey Court, the cell doors there were re-designed 3 times until they sounded nasty and intimidating.

I appeared there as a witness for the defence. My mate was facing a charge of armed robbery. They banged him up! (well he did do it )

Same thing happened with another mate at the local crown court. Same charge, same result.

I'm talking about seasoned criminals! Two of them did time for murder (although one did get his reduced to manslaughter on appeal). The others were mostly robbery or drugs. One was GBH but he got it quashed on appeal. The beak in the original trial made a grave error of judgement.

My favourite story is one where the mate in question was caught with about 2 pounds of cocaine in a sealed jar. It took about 12 months before he went to trial, the brief had already told him that he was not going to get away with anything less than a 5 year stint even if he threw himself on the mercy of the court.

Then they brought the evidence out and the jar full of cocaine had next to nothing left in it, just a little residue at the bottom. Mate said he was so happy when he saw that he almost had a heart attack right there in the court. He got slung and the judge gave the cops and the CPS a right bollocking.
    Current Lash Up:
