After reading the article, which is a good article well worth reading! But they are only listening for alien signals, they are not broadcasting with this antenna. I suppose it begs the question, if they hear from someone, what will they do with this information? Chances are, some idiot will want to send a return signal.

Personally I think that SETI is incorrect in their thinking, chances are that a space fairing race will not communicate with radio waves. Too much interference from natural phenomena, and it’s just too slow. If we hear a signal, it could be thousands of years old, and a return massage will take thousands of more years to get back, so, little for us to worry about really.

Also once a civilisation moves from analogue to digital transmission, when a digital signal strength falls below the background noise level it cannot be reconstructed, unlike that of an analogue signal.

Just send them a letter, 'Royal Mail Special Delivery'. Next day is guaranteed!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I suspect that a space fairing race would have mastered Quantum Entanglement, to send messages instantly over any distance. If you are traveling near the speed of light or faster, a radio signal would never catch up to you, you’d be outrunning it. And therefore worthless. So if we did make radio contact with a planet 500 light years away, it would take a thousand years for a radio signal to get there, and for the reply to get back. A very slow conversation. And chances are those transmitting wouldn’t be anymore farther along than us, and we would never meet. So every cent spent on SETI, could have been donated to me, and I’d have put it to much better use!

What, even an analogue radio signal, but surely they are the best/fastest......

What's idiotic about that? Surely it would be rude not to. We don't want aliens thinking we haven't been brought up proper.

They travel at the speed of light - best anyone can do, as far as we know.

They are experimenting with Quantum Entanglement, something Einstein theorized many years ago, and I don’t pretend to know all about it. But basically somehow two atoms are linked. And no matter how far apart they get, if you change the polarity of one, the polarity of the other will change too, instantly. Whether they are across the room, across the galaxy or across the universe, when one changes the other one does too, instantly. So, if you line up 8 of these atoms, you’ve got a digital word, with one set on earth and one set in a spaceship, communications can be instantaneous no matter how far away it gets. I saw on a Science channel show that successful experiments are being conducted right now! So in 50years a working device may very well exist.

And any space fairing race will have to figure out faster than light travel, light speed is just way too slow to get anywhere. Either that, or live forever so the time doesn’t matter. There are many theories today on ways to defeat the light speed limitation, (warp bubbles, worm holes, etc.), so a space fairing race a thousand years more advanced than us may very well have figured it all out, because even a .999% the speed of light is extremely slow if we ever want to get anywhere within a human lifetime. The Voyager space craft is at the edge of our solar system, has been flying since the late 70’s, and radio transmissions to it take over 15 hours! So to send it a message, and wait for it’s response, takes over 30 hours! And it’s still hasn’t gone anywhere yet. If this is reality, if this is as fast as anyone could ever go, then contacting another race is even more futile, if we did find an alien signal, what could we ever do with it? A return signal wouldn’t reach then in our lifetime, and we will never meet anyway, the distances just too great to cross. And as the article speaks about, many so called experts claim that any broadcast to tell the universe, “here we are!”, would be an invitation to be conquered by a superior race. If they had the ability to get here, then there is no way we could ever defend ourselves from such an advanced civilization, not like Colonials and Indians, more like an aardvark and an ant colony.

And if you are traveling at light speed, and are some light years away from home, if they send a radio message at light speed, it will be moving at the same speed as you, so it will never catch up to you to be received. Not just my humble opinion, that’s just math.
