When making coffee gets too technical or complicated [not to mention expensive], with results reliant on gadgets, and in general too much like hard work, it stops being fun.

well less surfaces aid crema retention, and as you can see how it flows out you can also check to see if its evenly distributed when flowing. If its not, then your tamping may for instance be off centre, or if coming more from sides you might not be producing a good seal at sides of filter and coffee.... Overall, although its a handy thing to have its by no means nes.. In fact it can make you too pernickety and lose the spontineity ... certainly not worth 160 bucks plus del lol

Well you have to keep the grinder on for 2 seconds more in my case.
It might take you a week of practise to get good, though. Maybe more for some people.
If you're happy with less than the best carry on with a standard pf (deliberate wind up).
But in Grants case I'd leave it. He's priced out of it because of Sage's deliberate meddling.
I have the same problem with my De Longhi I would imagine. Haven't used it in years. My old Gaggia Classic allowed bottomless portafilters but I found it IMPOSSIBLE to get acceptable results with it.
