I'm still finding that getting the grinds as evenly distributed and level as possible inside the filter basket, BEFORE tamping, is the key to a subsequently rich and even pour, and so if you have the time, it pays off being anal about it!
Key to that, for me, is ensuring that when using both the distribution tool and tamper, it's done on a TOTALLY LEVEL surface, not tilted.
So in order to facilitate that, I distribute and tamp down the grinds with the filter basket removed from the portafiller (placed on top of a rubber mat, to prevent slippage, on a super-level surface), and when I'm happy with the results obtained, just carefully pop the filter basket (now suitably packed with coffee) back inside the portafiller, before loading it into the machine.
That's process I used to create the previously illustrated puck, and also with this time tamping down slightly with a dedicated tamper, rather than just using the distribution tool alone. I shall continue using that method from now on, as it's yielded good results!
