I see you behind that sofa. You need a bigger sofa !!

Yes, he is loved by many, and not so loved by many too.

Back in the 80s and probably early 90s I saw him dozens of times, with various groups. Loved his music, and his playing in particular, every time.
Bought many of his Lps. Etc etc.

Then my tastes kind of changed, into earlier jazz. (50s mainly.)

But I would still hear him from time to time. I enjoyed his stuff with Hilliard ensemble, for example.

Then a few years ago I saw he was playing in Edinburgh, which is where I used to live, and see him, all those years ago. I decided to revisit, bought a not inexpensive ticket, and made the long track to the frozen north ( it was July )

I was so disappointed and actually walked out long before the end. Not exactly sure why, but I couldn’t get in to it at all.

But Ive listened again (3 times ) to “Your Song” this morning, and reminded myself why I loved his playing.

It’s basically the tone he gets on soprano. So emotional. It’s kind of singing but crying at the same time. Loving it.

    Great thread this.

    Ps love Surman too.

Brian, I'll come out from behind the sofa now.

Yes I understand the context he plays in and generally it is very interesting.
But my tastes were formed with giants such as 'Long tall' Dexter, Booker Ervin, Hank Mobley etc etc.

Garbarek, to me, most of the time, just puts me on edge.
I have records where it sounds as though he is violating a wild cat...
I am not sure of any other horn player on record that has this effect on me, well maybe Albert Ayler.

As I say, John Surman could play the most outlandish free solos and he just fits into my ear.
Maybe I'll try again with ol' Jan... as he seemed to be ECM's stable horn player, there is no shortage of material!

And don't get me started on Pat 'The Hair' Metheny's synth guitar ... why did no one say "Pat, NO!!!!"

Don’t you just love the folks who distribute music.

So, we have two giants of the tenor sax and yet someone in their wisdom decided to put pictures of two altos on the LP cover.

Yes, there are also two tenors pictured. Great, and appropriate.

    Two altos ?????????????????

    Rant over.

    It gets worse.

Had a look on EBay for this Lp and there is a different version of the same.

Two altos pictured.....oh no........... Much better.

A picture of Webster playing the very rare “left handed” saxophone. Worth a fortune those are !!!!
